DUPUYTREN’S CONTRACTURE
The palmar fascia of the hand contracts and curves one or more fingers, usually the ring and little finger, towards the hand. This membrane is surgically removed in order to once again be able to stretch out the fingers. Colloquially this affliction is called Viking disease.
A genetic, hereditary disorder that can occur in both the palm and the sole of the foot. Sometimes the hands may require surgery, but never the soles of the feet.
The operation is performed under local anaesthesia. The fascia is removed so that the finger/fingers can stretch out again.
1. The fascia in the palm contracts and prevents bending of the palm of the hand.
2. Gradually the patient finds it more difficult to stretch the fingers, which is disabling.
3. In a nerve block, several incisions are made in the skin of the palm
4. The skin edges are kept apart and the fascia is peeled from the flexor tendons.
