In Hammer Toe surgery, the toe is straightened, thus relieving the pain and calluses on the upper side. Usually the toes have to be held in position during healing with 1-2 pins, which are drilled into the toe and protrude through the tip of the toe.

The surgery is performed under local anaesthesia, which means you can eat and drink as usual before the surgery.

The surgery takes about 20 minutes. The total time at the clinic including preparations is about 1-2 hours. You should not drive yourself home after the operation. Sick leave is about 6 weeks.

To reduce the risk of infections associated with the surgery, you should wash yourself with Descutan soap (available at the pharmacy) the day before and on the morning of the surgery. Do not apply any ointment to the foot afterwards.

After the surgery, a dressing is applied. To make space for the foot, you will need a special shoe/sandal which we sell at cost price. This shoe will also make it easier for you to walk after the operation.

It is important for us to know whether you are exhibiting signs of infection, sore throat or fever before the operation.

If the time of your appointment does not suit you, please call us immediately at: +46 (0)42-24 27 70.

During the first few days after the surgery, you should keep your foot raised to minimize swelling, bleeding and thus impaired healing. The dressing should stay on for three weeks. It is removed in conjunction with the removal of stitches. The pins are removed on a return visit after 5 weeks.

On the first day after the surgery, you may feel some pain, and therefore a prescription for painkillers is emailed to the pharmacy. You can pick this up at any pharmacy, and it should be obtained before the surgery.

Take the first tablets at least 1 hour before the surgery.

You should continue taking these tablets after the surgery as prescribed in the prescription. You can obtain further information about your surgery when you next visit us.
