BEFORE/AFTER DEPUYTREN’S CONTRACTURE
The palmar fascia of the hand contracts and curves one or more fingers of the hand, usually the ring and little finger. This membrane is surgically removed in order to once again be able to stretch out the fingers. Colloquially this affliction is called Viking disease.
Your surgery is performed under local anaesthesia, which means you can eat and drink as usual before the surgery.
The surgery time varies depending on the type of surgery, about 20-50 minutes, and the total time at the clinic including preparations is about 1-2 hours.
Sick leave is about 6 weeks.
To reduce the risk of infections associated with the surgery, you should wash yourself with Descutan soap (available at the pharmacy) the day before and on the morning of the surgery. Do not apply any ointment to the foot afterwards.
During the first few days after the surgery, you should keep your hand raised to minimize swelling, bleeding and thus impaired healing. The dressing should stay on for three weeks, and on the return visit the stitches are also removed.
On the first day after the operation, you may feel some pain, and therefore a prescription for painkillers is emailed to the pharmacy. You can pick this up at any pharmacy you wish, and it should be obtained before the surgery.
Take the first tablet(s) about 1 hour before the surgery, as instructed on the box.
You should continue taking these tablets after the surgery as prescribed in the prescription. You can obtain further information about your surgery when you next visit us.
